Ask
the Virtual Consultant
Q: My business
often produces large scale schedules / specifications for building
projects. I have a lot of trouble negotiating the Microsoft Word tables
that contain the data. Is there a better way?
Stuart (Building
Contractor), Mornington Vic
A: Often
when tables or particular cells within the table get too large, they will
not display on the page and will 'roll over' to the next page leaving
large gaps at bottom of pages - unsightly isn't it? Also it is very difficult
align numbers or dollar quotes on the same vertical spot. In some instances,
spreadsheets (e.g. Microsoft Excel) are not only easier to enter the data
and navigate your way around the information but you can align (esp. numerical
or currency information), format or even hide information that you don't
need to see every time. Also with the suite of Microsoft products it is
easy to convert your Word tables to Excel spreadsheet or vice versa.
Q: I like to use
the internet to search for products / services as I am afraid that
telephone books are often out-of-date. What is the best way to utilise the
internet for this purpose?
Beth
(Fashion Consultant) - Yallambie, Vic
A: Depending
on the service or product that you require, there a number of ways of
finding what you need. You can search via local reference points (e.g.
White Pages, Yellow Pages, CitySearch etc), national research locations
(e.g. Anzwers, WebSearch etc) or worldwide sources (e.g. Google, Yahoo
etc). However sometimes you will find that the person / business you want
is not there and you still need to revert to manual means and refer to
the book!
